      Event Details

    From October 5th to 9th, 2010, the Africa Microfinance Network (AFMIN) will organize its 9th Annual Conference on the theme "Access to Financial Services: Reaching the Poor and Excluded". The overall objective of the conference is to bring together different stakeholders including microfinance practitioners, banks leaders, policy makers and development partners to recommend strategies to boost access to Finance for low-Income Households in Africa.

    Specific objectives:

    The specific objectives of the conference are to:

    • Present the state- of-practice in Microfinance Industry in Africa
    • Present different regulatory frameworks governing Microfinance Institutions in Africa
    • Share with participants best practices and innovative ideas in accessing to Financial Services for the Poor and Excluded in Africa
    • Present best practices of African MFIs, National and Regional Networks
    • Recommend strategies for boosting access to finance for the Poor and Excluded
    • Provide formal and informal opportunities for lateral learning, strategic partnerships and linkages.


    Expected outcome:

    • The state-of-practice in Microfinance Industry in Africa is presented
    • Different legal and regulatory frameworks are presented to participants
    • Best practices and innovative ideas in accessing to Financial Services are shared
    • Best practices of African MFIs and Microfinance Networks are presented
    • Key strategies for boosting access to finance for the poor and Excluded are recommended
    • Formal and informal opportunities for lateral learning, strategic partnerships and linkages are provided.

    Participants

    400 participants are expected to take part in the 9th Annual Conference of AFMIN in Accra, Ghana. Participants will include leaders of microfinance institutions and networks, policy makers, representatives of international development partner agencies such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the African Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP), Make Finance Work for Africa (MFW4A), and other international agencies and development banks.

    Speakers

    A variety of speakers are expected to share their experience and knowledge in accessing to financial services in Africa and Globally. The speakers include microfinance leaders, network leaders, policy makers and representatives of international development organizations.

    The expectations of AFMIN are to develop effective linkages between microfinance stakeholders, policy makers and international agencies to address the issue of access to Financial Services in Africa.

    Conference format

    The 9th Annual Conference of AFMIN will consist of following complementary events:

    • Exhibition of Financial products from Ghanaian Microfinance Institutions to be launched during the opening ceremony and the presence of the chief guests. The exhibition will run the whole week;
    • Field visits to APEX-Bank, Credit Unions Association (CUA), ECLOF, ACCION-Ghana, PROCREDIT.
    • Thematic workshop on Issues and Strategies in accessing to Financial Services
    • Thematic workshop on Best Practices and Innovative Ideas in accessing to Financial services
    • Annual General Assembly of AFMIN members to review progress, challenges and renew commitment to build a strong and responsive microfinance industry in Africa.
