  • Press Release of 10th AFMIN Annual Conference

    Bujumbura, October 15, 2010 – The Africa Microfinance Network, an institution
    representing networks of microfinance institutions from 22 African countries, organized its 10th Annual Conference and General Assembly in Bujumbura, Burundi from the 10th to 15th October, 2011. The main theme of this annual conference was: “Financial, Economic and Social crisis: Lessons learned and Responses of Microfinance Practitioners from Africa”.

    The overall objective of the conference was to bring together different stakeholders including microfinance practitioners, bank leaders, policy makers and development partners
    to share lessons learned from Word crisis and propose new innovative ideas for the development of microfinance in Africa.

    In view of the scope and relevance of this challenge that AFMIN had set for itself in order to promote the socio-economic development of Africa, several development partners co-sponsored this event. Among them were the Government of Burundi, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Catholic Relief Services, Ford Foundation, Mastercard Foundation, MISION Africa, SEEP Network, Mincrofinance National Fund (FNM-Benin), Terrafina Microfinance, Craft Silicon, and few members of National Network of Burundi (RIM-Burundi).The annual conference brought together more than 250 participants from 27 countries, representatives of ministers and ministries in charge of microfinance and small and microenterprise
    promotion, Central Banks, executive directors of microfinance networks, microfinance institutions and international organizations.

    This Annual Conference received strong support from the Government of Burundi, and the opening ceremony was presided over by high-level officials from the Burundian Government. At the official opening ceremony, the Second Deputy President of the Republic of Burundi presented the major challenges of Microfinance Industry in Africa, and he encouraged participants to make concrete propositions for developing Microfinance in Africa.

    This conference enabled participants to deepen their knowledge through the experiences
    shared by organizations such as Make Finance work for Africa, African Development
    Bank (Tunisia), CGAP, AEMFI-Ethiopia, Social Performance Task Force-USA, APSFD-Burkina Faso, Terrafina Microfinance–Burundi, AMFIU-Uganda, Microfinance Information eXchange-USA, Microfinance Rating-Italy, PAMIGA-France, Direction of microfinance-Senegal, APSFD-Senegal, Twitezimbere Microfinance-Burundi, Economist Intelligence Unit-UK, International Finance Corporation - USA, ADBanking-Rwanda, National Microfinance
    Fund (FNM–Benin), FoRCES-Burundi, SMART Campaign–USA, APSFD-Cote d’Ivoire, Microfinance Transparency –USA, APSFD-Mali, TAMFI-Tanzania, RIM-Burundi, ZAMFI-Zimbabwe, RIFIDEC-RDC, CECM-Burundi, Turame Community Finance-Burundi and WISE-Burundi.

    Leveraging the new knowledge acquired, participants formulated strategies and made concrete propositions for the development of Microfinance industry after the successive different financial, economic and social crisis. They recommended the improvement of Credit Methodologies, the acceleration of adoption of Consumer Protection Measures, the financing of agricultural sector, a better coordination of all social performance initiatives throughout the continent, the dissemination of Best practices in Post-Conflict Area, The introduction of Financial Education in High-school programs and its promotion by National and regional Microfinance Networks in Africa.
